Throw the switch for the water pump fuse located in the fuse box over the dryer (the fuse box switches have labels on it indicating the correct switch). The water heater is across the hall from the washer and dryer. Make sure it is turned up the “vacation” setting to hot (or the hot side of warm). Heat- the cottage has two thermostats: one near the front door and master bedroom and one near the kitchen and remaining bedrooms. Turn up to left side of the solid line or higher for your comfort. It is hot water heat so it can gurgle a bit. Operational Information Before using the fireplaces please open the dampers. Firewood is available in the wood shed. Garbage should be kept in tightly closed containers if left outside. The wildlife is very resourceful! A garbage can is located in the potting shed. If you leave garbage outside be sure to put it inside the shed or the wildlife may get into it. If the refrigerator emits a high pitch noise, just unplug it and plug it back in. It will run quieter! The Video System To prevent any power surges when no one is at the cottage, we turn off the entire video system on the surge protector. To activate the system, simply turn on the surge protector switch located in the brown cabinet next to the TV. You will know the system is on by the illuminated orange light on the surge protector. We also have DirecTV. To operate, the TV must be tuned to channel 3 and the DirecTV tuner must be on (push the far left button on the RCA unit until the light green light remains illuminated). For information on what’s showing you can depress the “guide” button on the DirecTV remote control or review one of the back issues of TV Plus magazine to see where the various channels are located. We receive most of the DirecTV channels – including east and west coast network feeds for CBS, NBC, PBS and Fox (found on the 380 to 389 channels). ABC can be received on channel 29 out of Traverse City on the TV (but the DirecTV receiver must be turned off to receive this channel). If the reception is still poor, make sure the VCR is turned off and press the “Menu” button on the Philips/Magnavox remote control. Scroll to the “Setup” setting and press the double arrow forward button to select. Scroll down to the “tuner” setting. Press the double arrow forward setting until you get to “Antenna”. Press the menu button to return to the broadcast and tune the TV to channel 29. Channels 501 through 528 broadcast CD quality music. Each channel provides specifically themed music. DirecTV also has the capability of providing Pay Per View Movies (channels 100 to 199) – similar in selection to what you might find in the current movies section of a video store. You are welcome to use this service but since this option is in addition to our monthly subscription, you will have to compensate us for any of these charges (above and beyond your cottage rental fee). Movies are $3.99 each but special events (such as prize fights, concerts and College GameDay football games) often run much higher. Simple ordering instructions are provided on-screen for the movies. The VCR and DVD player are functional. To operate the VCR, the channel must be on channel 3. To operate the DVD player, the television must be tuned to “EXT” (use the TV remote control channel down button, the “-“ button on the “CH” area of the Philips/Magnavox remote control, and scroll down past channel 2 to get to this setting). The Stereo Systems There are two components to the stereo system located to the left of the wood burning stove in the living room. It has a main receiver unit and the CD player. If you want to listen to the radio on the receiver (the Sansui unit) power up the receiver and select FM or AM on the Selector dial. If you wish to play a CD, you will need to power up both the receiver and the CD player and switch the selector dial to “AUX-1”. The stereo in the TV room has two sets of speakers. The “A” speakers are hooked up to the speakers in the TV room. The “B” speakers operate the outdoor speakers (the outdoor speakers are put away for the winter to prevent accelerated weathering). To listen to DirecTV in stereo, the stereo needs to be set on the “LD” setting. All the other settings are self-evident. Skiing There is a nice cross-country path across from the old township beach (not the new township beach – formerly known as “The Church beach”) on North Lamkin. Directions are available at the Good Hart General Store. Many other state trails are located around the area. Nubs Nob and Boyne Highlands are 20 minutes away (approximately 15 miles) off of Pleasantview Rd. (about 1 mile north of Quick Road) near Harbor Springs. To get there from the cottage, take Robinson Road west (turn right off of M-119) to State Road. Take State Road south (turn right) to Stutsmanville Road (at this intersection there is a church on the right-hand side of the road and a restaurant on the left-hand side of the road). Head east (turn left) on Stutsmanville Road to Pleasantville Road. Head south (turn right) on Pleasantville Road about 2 to 2 1/2 miles. Look for the signs – the turnoff for Nubs Nob is on the left side of the road and Boyne Highlands is about ¼ mile further south on the right-hand side of the road. For sledding, the city of Harbor Springs has Kiwanis Park and Petoskey has Winter Sports Park – which also has two ice skating rinks, a towrope-assisted downhill skiing hill and a warming lodge (where you can also rent ice skates). Beaches Good Hart has two township beaches – the better of the two is known locally as “The Church beach”. It is located within minutes of the cottage. Inquire at the Good Hart General Store for directions to either beach. The Good Hart Store This general store (located within walking distance of the cottage heading north off of M-119) has numerous items available including the daily newspapers - from Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Detroit, and Chicago – freshly baked bread, milk and other food items. It is also licensed to sell packaged liquor, beer and wine. Other Grocery Shopping Harbor Springs – The closest grocery shopping for week-long supplies is the Harbor Springs IGA. Take M-119 north to Robinson Road. Turn right on Robinson Road and go approximately 6 miles to the State Road intersection. Turn right on State Road and take that into Harbor Springs city limits. As you enter the outskirts of Harbor Springs look for Clark Street on the right-hand side of the Road (if you reach the intersection where State Road ends – Lake Road – you have gone too far). Turn right on last street before the dead-end intersection and go ½ a block to IGA. Petoskey – At the north end of town is an excellent all-purpose grocery called Glen’s Market. It has an excellent deli, seafood and meat department along with a well-stocked line of general groceries. It also has a Blockbusters Video attached to it. The fastest way to get there is as follows. Take M-119 north (less than 1/2 a block) to Robinson Road. Turn right on Robinson Road and go approximately 6 miles to the State Road intersection. Turn right on State Road and take it to Quick Road. Turn left on Quick Road and go 3-4 miles until it dead-ends at Pleasantville Road. Turn right on Pleasantville and take it until it dead-ends at M-119. Turn left on M-119. About 1 mile after you turn onto M-119 the road will veer to the right (as you complete the veer right you will see the Harbor Springs airport on the right-hand side of the road), Stay on M-119 until it dead-ends at Highway M-31 (La Seniorita’s Mexican restaurant will be on the right – Wick’s Lumber will be straight ahead). Turn right on M-31 and go 1/4 of a mile. Turn right into the Glen’s parking lot.
